What is the Relationship Between Relaxin and Pregnancy?

What is relaxin?

Relaxin is a pregnancy hormone. It is produced in the early stages of pregnancy by the corpus luteum (the shell of the egg left behind after ovulation), and then by the placenta from about the twelfth week onwards. This hormone is evident in the body from as early as the second week of pregnancy, when it is produced in large amounts during the first trimester, then reduces by 20% and continues to be produced until the birth.

Grow Calendar 2011

Relaxin affects collagen fibres

Collagen is the main component of connective tissue found in cartilage, tendons and ligaments. The stability of all joints is maintained by ligaments which are made up of these dense, fibrous strands of connective tissue. During pregnancy relaxin increases the water content of collagen fibres, increasing their size and elasticity.

What effect does this have on the joints? Ligaments are normally inelastic, a quality necessary to maintain joint stability and prevent unnecessary movement around the joint. Under the influence of relaxin the ligaments become more supple and pliable, allowing increased movement which in turn reduces joint stability.

Which joints are most at risk? The symphysis pubis and sacroiliac joints of the pelvis are fibrous joints. Very little space separates the ends of the bones in a fibrous joint, and in a non-pregnant state very limited movement, if any, takes place around the joint. Additionally, fibrous joints have no joint cavity and rely solely on ligaments for their stability. The resulting increased range of movement of the symphysis pubis and sacroiliac joints, together with the progressive pressure exerted by the growing baby, places these joints in an extremely vulnerable position.

What about the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles? Collagen is also found in the connective tissue of the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. This is necessary for the abdominal muscles to stretch and allow the uterus to grow out of the abdomen, and for the pelvic floor muscles to stretch to deliver the baby. However, this adaptation severely reduces the support previously given by these muscles and has major implications

The Stages of Pregnancy

What Everyone Needs to Know About The Various Stages of Pregnancy

Pregnancy is such a critical state that keeping a careful markings on what is happening in your body is important in order to ensure that safety is at the top of one's priority during such condition.

Grow Calendar 2011

For pregnant women, it is important to note on the various stages of pregnancy so that you will be able to anticipate what changes to occur and tailor the care you are doing for your body, and for the loved ones, coordinate the support needed by the pregnant woman.

At such stage, it is advisable to keep a journal of yourself so that you will be able to note and track on every event that is happening in your body. Your doctor and yourself can use journals for the purpose of making sure that everything is all right and no needed medical support should be extended for you.

Stages of Pregnancy

While pregnancy is basically a matter of concern among women who are pregnant, it is also helpful for partners and loved ones to be aware on everything that is happening on the woman's body so that proper and specific support would be extended on each semester of pregnancy.

The various stages of pregnancy including the unique characteristics and changes that may happen are listed in detail in the next section.

A. First Trimester - The first semester of pregnancy is characterized by many symptoms a host of changes. This may be difficult for first timers for they would be experiencing the many symptoms and telltale pregnancy horrors typical for such condition.

Symptoms may include tiredness (typical morning sickness), changes on the size of breast and the body mass, vomiting and nausea among other things. Excessive urination may be experienced during this time due to the hormones circulating in the blood which is also brought about by the developing fetus is the uterus of a pregnant woman.

Moreover, before the first semester of pregnancy concludes, the fetus may grow to a size of a hazelnut and starts showing signs life such as heartbeat, and locomotive abilities (moving). This critical stage is also a sign of intensive and regular medical checkup ensuring the health of the fetus and the mother and keeping any more-than-usual pregnancy-related symptoms that may occur.

Nutritious diet is advised at this stage and all throughout the course of pregnancy while advising on keeping a regular and light physical exercise.

B. Second Trimester. The second semester is marked by more aggressive changes. Body figure dramatically changes in the 6th weeks and more pronounced contractions, known as Braxton Hicks contractions, would be experienced. It is also in this stage that your belly will start to become more prominent and you may feel the fetus growing inside you.

On week 20-22, uterus will start growing all the way down to your navel and several changes including the production of colostrum (most nutritious first milk) in your breast, and color on nipples and areolas and overall skin tone may bring discomfort to your appearance.

Also, blood vessels in several parts of your body where the fetus develops the most experiences severe pressure and may result to characteristic hemorrhoids or varicose veins. Pigmentations and other discolorations, called chloasma, may also become apparent during this period and may disappear after giving birth.

Ultimately, the end of the second semester shows more signs of the body development of the fetus as it grows the size of 22 to 25 cm (11 to 14 inches) and may weight around one and a half pounds and may do the usual "kicking".

C. Third Trimester. The third semester is usually called the "preparation time" for childbirth. It is in this stage that your body will become less tolerable for pain and changes. You may start complaining on your lower back and your breast feeling "loaded" to the max.

This stage is also an opportunity for would-be moms to start taking those breastfeeding and childbirth exercises in order to better prepare them for that "big day". This preparation scheme would eliminate some possible delivery spoof which occurs among parents who normally are not better prepared on such circumstances.

Theoretically, this stage is the most uncomfortable semester of pregnancy as you may experience leg cramps, lowerback ache, frequent urination or uncontrolled bladder activity, and more pronounced Braxton Hicks contractions.

Pregnancy Calendar - Enjoy Every Progression of Your Baby

A pregnancy calendar can be very useful for a woman as it allows you to keep tabs on the progression of the baby and its mental as well as physical health.

You would come to know when your baby is moving, when it will be ready to breathe, move limbs etc. The experience is simply mind blowing.

Grow Calendar 2011

Here is a pregnancy calendar that you can use to make notes on the changes in your body and the embryo at different stages of pregnancy.

- Week 1 - 4

This is the time when conception takes place. During this period, the egg is fertilized by the sperm of the man and will begin the 7-10 days journey to the uterus. Cell division begins immediately during this journey.

- Week 5 - 8

The baby's heart starts beating and it develops arms and legs. It is possible to differentiate the head and the tail of the baby. By the end of week 6 your baby will be 4-6 mm from Crown to Rump (CR). The blood circulation is well established from the heart.

The primordial of the liver, pancreas, lungs, and stomach are evident. The hand plates become present week 7, and the baby is about 7-9 mm CRL by the end of the week. The genital tubercle is present, but you can not distinguish girls from boys yet.

- Week 9 - 12

The baby starts moving around. The mother may not be able to feel the movement. It has elbows now and is ca 13-17 cm CR and 1g in weight. Tiny toes begin to form and it will move away by touching the uterine wall. It can also spontaneously move. The eyes are open and the external genitalia are now differentiated.

The external ears and the upper lip are fully formed. Now in week 11 the head is about half of the body size. At the end of week 12 the baby is about 12 g. Now it has reflexes and moves in the digestive location. With a Doppler you are able to hear the very fast heart beats.

- Week 13 - 16

You would start feeling the baby around. Your doctor should be able to determine the sex. You can even see how it sucks his thumb while he is screening. All twenty teeth have formed and are starting to grow. The weight is ca 28 g. The pancreas of the little one is even secreting insulin.

During week 15 and 16 the skin is very thin and you can see the blood vessels clearly underneath. Your baby is about 70 grams. The scalp hair pattern is developing. And the heart is pumping about 25 quarts of blood a day. The nails are well formed and the ears have moved from the neck to the head. Using an ultrasound you might be able to tell if your baby is a girl or boy, but it's still a bit early.

- Week 17 - 20

Now the doctor can easily determine the gender and be more certain about it. At 20.5 cm total length, your baby is growing rapidly. The pads of the fingers and toes are formed and the fingerprints are developing. Week 19 is impressive for growth! It will increase in weight to 227 g! Permanent teeth buds are forming behind the already formed milk teeth buds.

- Week 20 - 24

During this stage, the fat deposits tend to build upon the body. Hence, they can easily cope up with any changes in the temperature prior to and after birth. You may be aware of sleep wake cycles in your little one. The weight is now up to 283 g and it measures about 25 cm. Many moms have an ultrasound at week 20. It may be your first peek at baby. Towards the end of this trimester the baby will begin to settle, usually in a head down position.

- Week 24 - 28

This is the phase when the baby starts hearing noises from the outside world. Now, these can be just muffled noises. Baby moves less because it tends to feel restricted. The weight is ca 709 g.

During week 26 the veins are visible through the skin, although it is quickly changing from transparent to opaque. Now it can hear you and those around you. Your heartbeat, digestion, and certain body functions and external noises are heard by the baby. Now you may feel it jump at a sudden noise. The uterus also allows some light to be seen. So your baby is aware of lightness and darkness.

- Weeks 29 - 32

The eyes start to move. The head grows in size and by the week thirty two, all the internal organs are fully developed. However, the lungs are not fully developed yet. The baby is now regulating his own temperature and the bone marrow is in charge of producing the red blood cells. It is even urinating about a half liter of urine into the amniotic fluid everyday! The weight is about 1.16 kilo!

The little one is very aware of the surroundings. You may be able to distinguish sleep and wake cycles. You may worry that if you are breathless from walking or sometimes even just sitting that your baby is in danger. This is not true. She/he is getting plenty of oxygen from your placenta. The movements will peak this week then alter in quantity and quality.

- Week 33 -36

It can easily blink his eyes. During week 35 the weight is about 2.15 kilo and measures ca 45 cm. She/he continues to grow and snuggle down into your pelvis. The benefit of this is that you can breathe more easily; however, you also have to urinate more often.

- Week 37 - 40

The lungs of your baby are ready to breathe all by themselves. You can give birth to your baby any time now.

Week By Week Pregnancy

1st to 12th week

The first trimester (1st week to 12th week) is the most important part of the week by week pregnancy chart. It starts by the egg getting fertilized by the sperm and then it travels through the fallopian tube. During these weeks the body of the mother undergoes many hormonal changes. These changes can trigger symptoms such as tiredness, nausea and vomiting. Since each woman is different she experiences different symptoms.

Grow Calendar 2011

1st four weeks

In the first four weeks the baby's brain, heart and spinal cord begin to form. The leg and arm buds also begin to appear. At eight weeks all major body structures begin to firm. The heart beats get a regular rhythm and the sex organs also begin to take shape. Even the umbilical chord becomes visible. At the end of eight weeks the baby is known as the fetus.

12 Weeks

At 12 weeks, the nerves and the muscles begin to work in tandem with each other. The external sex organs can now disclose whether the child is a boy or a girl. The fetus can close its eyes to protect them. The head growth has slowed down and the baby is 3 inches long.

16 Weeks

At 16 weeks the muscle tissues begin to form. The baby now has a complete skeleton. The skin also begins to form and your baby makes motions through its mouth like it is sucking. The body length now reaches 5 inches. The baby begins to grow fast. Your baby then becomes more active at 20 weeks. The mother might feel some movements inside her stomach. The baby has small hair in some areas and this hair is called lanugo. Toenails, eyebrows and eyelashes have formed. Your baby develops senses such as hearing and it can also swallow.

24 Weeks

At 24 weeks the bone marrow begins to make blood cells. Footprints and fingerprints have also formed fully. Though the lungs are formed they don't work. Your baby has now a normal pattern of sleeping and keeping awake. In case of a boy the testicles start moving towards the scrotum. If it is a girl then the ovaries and the uterus fall in place. Your baby is now 12 inches long.

32 Weeks

The baby's bones are fully formed at 32 weeks but they are still soft. The lungs begin to breathe slightly. The baby starts to gain weight quickly. The body can store fats, calcium, minerals and iron. The eyes open and close according to the sensitivity of light.

36 Weeks

At 36 weeks the body fat increases. The baby is getting bigger and there is less space left in the womb to accommodate further growth. The baby has settled down and there are less movements. Your baby becomes 19 inches and weighs 6 pounds. Your baby is fully grown after 37 weeks. It is ready to enter our world as its organs are fully grown. The baby will normally turn head down position for birth. This process completes the week by week pregnancy cycle.

Weekly Pregnancy Calendar - Almanac For Every Mother To Be

A weekly pregnancy calendar is a manual that records the journey of the fetus from conception to birth. It expounds in detail, the pregnancy week by week development that the fetus should achieve in the mother's womb. The pregnancy calendar also gives the details about the changes that occur in the mother's body and tells how to cope with these changes. This information can help the would-be-mother to ascertain that the fetus is growing in a healthy manner and her pregnancy is safe. Hence, every mother-to-be must possess a pregnancy week by week calendar to keep track of the milestones that the growing fetus achieves every week. Nowadays, there are numerous websites from where you can download these pregnancy calendars for free.

A Look At The Pregnancy Calendar

Grow Calendar 2011

A weekly pregnancy calendar generally follows a forty week schedule. The calculation of the calendar is very simple. The LMP i.e. the last menstrual period date is the first day of the pregnancy calendar. Forty weeks from the date is the due date. Here, it has to be noted that only in very few cases, the baby is delivered on the due date. Generally any day after the 37th week is safe, because the baby would have attained full development by the 37th week.

A pregnancy calendar generally makes the following information available.

1. The growth and development that the fetus must achieve in each week of pregnancy,

2. The physical and the emotional changes that the mother-to-be undergoes and coping with these changes,

3. Nutritional requirements and exercises for a health pregnancy,

4. The do's and don'ts during the nine months.

In a nutshell, a weekly pregnancy calendar is an excellent reference guide for every anxious would-be mother. It helps her to understand every change and emotion that she would be undergoing through the forty weeks of the pregnancy wheel. It helps her to keep track of what is going on in her womb every minute. The calendar helps in alleviating her anxiety and comforts her.

Maintaining Your Own Weekly Pregnancy Calendar

You can also make your own pregnancy calendar. It is very simple. Once you know your LMP and due date, you can yourself start maintaining the physical and emotional changes that you undergo on a weekly basis. You can compare this with any standard pregnancy calendar to assure yourself that everything is well.

Advantages Of Maintaining Your Own Pregnancy Calendar

In addition to the abovementioned benefits, maintaining your own weekly pregnancy calendar has some apparent advantages.

Grow Calendar 2011

Discover what to expect through the pregnancy stages.

Weeks 1 and 2

Technically, pregnancy has not even occurred yet! It is important to take prenatal vitamins and get yourself in optimal health.

Week 3

Ovulation should occur some time around this week. If the egg is met by sperm and fertilized, implantation should also occur.

Week 4

If you are pregnant, you will have noticed that you missed your period - a major sign of pregnancy. A pregnancy test will most likely show a positive result by now.

Week 5

Hormone levels are increasing quite rapidly at this point, and pregnancy symptoms will most likely be surfacing. Symptoms such as nausea, tender breasts, and exhaustion are fairly common. The baby's heart will actually begin to beat this week!

Week 6

Pregnancy symptoms will persist, and become more prominent as hormone levels continue to rise. The placenta and umbilical cord develop this week, with rapid growth in the baby occurring as well.

Week 7

The baby is about the size of a grain of rice at this point. The brain, nose, eyes, and other organs are developing.

Week 8

An expanding waistline may be experienced starting around the 8-week point. An ultrasound should be scheduled for the 12 week mark to ensure everything is proceeding properly. The baby's sex will be determined this week.

Week 9

Congestion and heartburn may be experienced by now, making pregnancy a little uncomfortable. It's important to find out what medications can and cannot be taken during pregnancy to alleviate these symptoms. The baby is about 13-17mm from crown to rump, and growing quickly.

Week 10

You will most likely be 'showing' at this point. Veins will be more prominent in the face, neck and breasts. The baby will start moving around in the womb, and the tail disappears.

Week 11

Hopefully, nausea will start to subside by now, but many women continue to feel nauseous throughout their entire pregnancy. There are prenatal tests that can be done around this point, especially if the mother is over 35. The most crucial part of development with the baby is almost complete.

Week 12

This week officially marks the end of the first trimester! The risk of miscarriage is drastically reduced by now. The baby is about 3 1/2 inches long, and weighs about 14 grams. The eyes start moving closer together on the baby's face, and the ears move into position. So much has been accomplished in a few short weeks!

Pregnancy Week By Week

When I found out I was expecting, I loved to track my pregnancy week by week online. There are several ways to do this and it is a neat way to see not only what is happening to your own body, but how the baby is growing inside of you which is an amazing thing. One website allowed me to create a cute picture ticker which was a graphical representation of what point I was in the pregnancy at any moment. I could look at it and see how many days I had left until my due date and I could also see how big the baby was at that moment in time. It was incredible to see the image go from an embryo to an actual human being near the end. It made me so excited for the birth and the day I would get to meet my daughter. I also found an online forum where I met other women who were expecting babies in the same month as I was expecting mine. We all would post questions and ideas to each other so that we could benefit from our collective experience.

Another method I used to track my pregnancy week by week was our family blog. It was an outlet for me to talk about what was going on during the nine months leading up to the birth and it also allowed my husband and I to share ultrasound images with our friends and family so they could see how the baby was growing. My favorite post was the one where we told everyone we were having a girl. I took a picture of our son wearing his "I'm a Big Brother" tee-shirt and holding a bouquet of pink balloons and just uploaded that image and titled it: "It's a Girl!!!". It was so fun to see everyone's comments pop up. We were so excited and couldn't wait to meet her.

It was fun to track my pregnancy week by week and I know that if we decide to have a third child I will do it again.

Maintain A Weekly Pregnancy Calendar To Look Into Your Child's Development

Weekly pregnancy calendar is something that every expectant mother should possess. A weekly pregnancy calendar records the chronological changes that a woman and the fetus inside her undergo during nine months of her pregnancy. Any pregnancy health related concerns right from last date of menstruation, to experiencing an early sign of pregnancy and growth and development of the fetus can be described in the weekly pregnancy calendar. The calculation of a pregnancy calendar is also very simple. You have to start from the last date of menstruation till the predicted date of your child's birth.

The Benefits of Pregnancy Calendar:
The first thing that you will ask your doctor after being confirmed of your pregnancy is the due date or the predicted date of your child's birth. And as a duty bound expectant mother you will note down the predicted date on your weekly pregnancy calendar. Generally a very small percentage of babies are born on the stipulated date and most of them are born during the thirty eighth and forty second week from the last menstrual period. This is why it is important for an expectant mother to maintain a weekly pregnancy calendar as it will help her and her spouse analyze the growth of their baby as well as keep a check on her health.

Grow Calendar 2011

The nine months of pregnancy is generally divided into trimester and so it becomes easy for you to mainly your weekly pregnancy calendar on the basis of trimester. The first trimester lasts from first week of pregnancy to the twelfth week of pregnancy. The second trimester starts from week thirteen and extends up to the twenty sixth week. The third trimester covers the rest of the weeks, i.e. from 27-40 and ends with baby's delivery. The last few weeks are very crucial and there will be additional concerns during these weeks. It is very important to note every particular concern in the weekly pregnancy calendar, as contractions will occur in a more pronounced way and is often referred to as "false labor."

These contractions are usually mistaken as true contractions but are not as frequent as real labor contractions. The irrefutable sign that your labor has begun is when your amniotic sac ruptures and there is a large flow of water. A doctor should be immediately consulted and if possible the expectant mother should be hospitalized. Maintaining a weekly pregnancy calendar will help you keep a track of the baby's progress and development and also note down the time and date when actual labor pain starts.

Usually your partner shows an increasing amount of interest in maintaining a weekly pregnancy calendar. You will be definitely surprised t his reaction when he sees his baby grow inside your womb. There are different weekly pregnancy calendars that are available on store and also on internet. You can buy or print out these weekly pregnancy calendars and note down early pregnancy symptom to the growth of embryo and changes in body structure and so on.

Pregnancy - Pregnancy in the Seventh Week

There are usually early pregnancy classes for you and your partner. Always keep a pregnancy calendar that will provide a week by week display of your pregnancy and will attempt to calculate a probable conception date. As the fetus develops, your healthy baby now has reflexes, so can move spontaneously. The muscles and nerves begin to function. Week seven of your pregnancy is very much the same in terms of pregnancy first weeks. You are now probably in the throes of morning sickness.

Pregnancy first weeks can have you craving certain foods. This may be the body's way of getting the nutrients it needs. Sometimes, food you loved before may be repulsive to you now. Always bear in mind that a healthy balance of foods will produce a healthy baby as the growing fetus should get the correct nutrients. Keep a pregnancy calendar to track your pregnancy and development milestones.

Grow Calendar 2011

If you could see inside yourself, you would find the fetus has an oversized head in proportion to its body. Pregnancy first weeks shows the changes taking place as the embryo's facial features are forming - also the baby's hands and feet look like paddles. At the beginning of the 7th week, a healthy baby is approximately 1/4 inch, but by the end of this week will grow to about 1/2 inch. Use your personal pregnancy calendar to follow your baby's development from conception to birth.

By the seventh week of pregnancy, the fetus is growing rapidly and the umbilical cord is formed and a healthy baby is growing rapidly within the uterus. Pregnancy first weeks shows the development of the features of the baby like its eyes, nose and ears. The thorax and abdomen are entirely formed and lungs begin its slow development. The baby can open its mouth during the seventh week and you can see the development of the baby's fingers. Your pregnancy calendar is an important aspect of keeping track of your baby's development.

Pregnancy Weekly Calendar - Your Guide For Nine Months

What's a pregnancy weekly calendar and how does one use it? A pregnancy calendar is a pregnancy week by week record of the changes taking place in your body, plus the pregnancy symptoms. With the help of this calendar, you can get more information about the different stages of pregnancy and what happens in each stage. This awareness is helpful in the pregnancy term, as it protects you from unnecessary anxiety and fear and lets you enjoy your pregnancy in peace.

Calculating Pregnancy Weekly Calendar

Grow Calendar 2011

There is a definite technique that you can use to calculate this calendar. The beginning of this calendar is the date of your last period. This is the same date used by doctors to predict the date of your delivery or your 'due date', which is about 40 weeks from your last period. It may be one or two weeks more or less than the actual date for different women. Every mom-to-be is anxious to know the exact day when her baby will be born. Therefore, this weekly calendar becomes all the more important.

Calendar Is Not The 'Be All And End All'

There is one thing that you should keep in mind while referring your pregnancy weekly calendar. It is not the exact basis to rely on for every pregnancy symptom or change in your body. This calendar is prepared on the basis of general statistics and shows average figures. Moreover, it is a fact that, not all women have the same kind of pregnancy. Each pregnancy is unique and each consecutive pregnancy in the same woman is distinctive too!

For example, the calendar mentions a list of pregnancy symptoms that would appear in a particular stage of pregnancy. Now this does not mean that you will get all those symptoms and in the same intensity as mentioned in the pregnancy weekly calendar. There are some women who don't experience symptoms like morning sickness at all!

The same holds true for the prediction of delivery date. It's not necessary that the date predicted in the calendar is 100% accurate. The actual delivery date usually varies from 38th week to 42nd week after your last period.

Importance of a weekly pregnancy calendar
A visit to a doctor after experiencing the early signs of pregnancy will confirm your pregnancy. The doctor will calculate your probable due date of delivery. This date is usually about forty weeks from the first day of your last menstruation. A very small number of babies are actually born on their exact due date. Most are born two weeks earlier or two weeks later than the expected due date. This is where the weekly pregnancy calendar becomes important. It helps in keeping the dates of conception, expected due date, track of baby's development through various stages of growth per week and monitors mother's health by telling of body changes you will experience every week.

A full term of pregnancy is separated and divided into three trimesters.
First trimester. First week to twelfth week.
Second trimester. Thirteenth week to twenty- sixth weeks.
Third trimester. Twenty seventh week till the date of baby's delivery.

As the delivery date draws nearer, there will be more pressure on the pregnancy. In last two weeks the baby takes birthing position and pushes down in the cervical canal resulting in woman experiencing change in balance while walking. During this time a mother provides antibodies to baby for fighting off infections. A mother may experience discomfort and pronounced contractions or false labor. A weekly pregnancy calendar is of utmost importance at this time as it keeps a track of her and her baby's progressive developments. It helps in explaining when to contact doctor and when to sleep off the discomfort.
